Beside the River

Famille rose enamels on translucent glass; with a flat lip and slightly concave foot; painted on one main side with Zhong Kui and his sister beneath an umbrella in a boat manned by one of his tamed demons, with a vase of flowers, a picnic box, and a tied bundle between them, and on the other with an elegant riverside gathering, with three bearded scholars in casual robes playing a game of Zhuangyuanchou 狀元籌 at a table set beneath a leafy tree and branches of flowering gui 桂 (cassia), while a fourth scholar stands behind them with a pipe that a servant is lighting for him; the foot inscribed in seal script Qianlong nian zhi 乾隆年製 (‘Made in the Qianlong era’)
