The Hall for the Care in the Cultivation of Virtue, the private residence of the Daoguang emperor, is discussed under Treasury 6, no. 1297, with Sale 2, lot 90, as another example bearing the name. Those two, both with underglaze decoration, are exceptions to the usual famille rose enamelled wares produced for the hall, several of which are snuff bottles.

The warrior depicted here is Xiang Yu (see Sale 4, lot 162). This unusual back view of Xiang Yu is based on one illustrated in Jin Guliang’s Wushuang pu(A record of peerless [personalities], p. 381), a collection of printed line drawings of noted historical figures published during the last decade of the seventeenth century.
