Like Gui Xianggu (see Sale 5, lot 12), Yan painted in his own distinctive style and with his own distinctive palette throughout his life, making no attempt whatsoever to alter them, even when painting under the spurious signature of Zhou Leyuan. It is also unusual to find two identical compositions by him, as with the cat-and-katydid scene here and on Sale 3, lot 74, although he repeated subjects from a fairly limited range throughout his career.
