By 1890 Zhou has refined his landscape style to a point of subtle perfection, and this bottle, in studio condition and looking as if it had never been used, epitomizes this later style. Apart from the more complex compositions, with less left-over space and more detail, there are two key features of the later style. The pines and other trees now fill the foreground on a larger scale than on most of his earlier landscape paintings, even the more complex ones, but have not yet taken over as the main subject; and the distant hills are much more subtly shaded, with a multitude of small, paler hillocks defined by pale shades of ink making up the slopes of the peaks. These are usually backed by blue, more distant peaks, as here.
