Treasury 5, no. 875 (‘Confucian Harmony’)

Transparent ruby-red glass and slightly milky glass, suffused with air bubbles of various small sizes, including some elongated ones; with a flat lip and recessed convex foot surrounded by a protruding flat foot rim; carved as a single overlay with a continuous design of a lotus pond with formalized waves on which a swan (or goose) swims beneath a dragonfly near a raised boss possibly intended as the sun, with a cattail on which a swallow is perched and an arrowroot

Another overlay from the high point of the art - probably at court - this is from the same general group as Sale 9, lot 178. Of similarly dark colour, although the red layer is not as thick, it displays a very similar bubble-suffused, milky ground and is carved with equal mastery.

An indication of the early period is provided by the wide mouth usually associated with the core group from which this comes.
