Lot 24

Lot 24
('Divided Immortals')
HK$562,500

Famille rose enamels on colourless glaze on porcelain; with a flat lip, flat foot and flat footrim; painted on each main side with a panel, each with four of the Eight Buddhist Immortals, each with his or her familiar attribute, in a garden setting with ornamental rocks and trees, surrounded by a formalized floral design on a ruby-pink ground, the foot inscribed in iron-red seal script 乾隆年製 Qianlong nian zhi (‘Made during the Qianlong period’), the lip and footrim painted with gold enamel, the interior glazed
Jingdezhen Imperial kilns, 1740-1760
Height: 5.8 cm
Mouth/lip: .6/1.5 cm

Provenance:
Robert Kleiner, September 2000

This would have been made as part of a set of perhaps 8, 10 or 20 bottles of the same design, of which only a few have survived, although the excellent condition of some of those that have suggests that they were kept in the safety of the Imperial storage until these storage facilities were pillaged, after 1860, for nearly a century.
